The 11th edition of the KYOTOGRAPHIE International Photography Festival will be held from April 15th–May 14th, 2023, presenting 14 exhibitions in iconic Kyoto venues.
THEME OF 2023 « BORDER »
Life inhabits and defends various borders.
These lines shape our existence and frame our experience; they protect, destroy, discriminate, and differentiate life in all forms.
Human instinct pushes us to evolve, face new frontiers and create new territories.
This innate desire to differentiate and break boundaries is a powerful force in nature and essential to survival.
In 2023, we seek out these borders, identified as physical, temporary, transient, or transparent.
KYOTOGRAPHIE, held in the spring in the ancient city of Kyoto, is one of the few truly international artistic events taking place in Japan. While honoring its millennium of history and tradition, Kyoto is at the same time a leading light of culture on an international scale. Valuable col- lections of photography and works by internationally renowned artists are exhibited in elegant, historic buildings as well as modern archi- tectural spaces. Some shows feature the work of traditional artisans, while others highlight collaborations with the most modern technolo- gy. The exhibitions are presented outside the traditional galley format and work in harmony with the spaces in which they reside. Our goal is to present a multifaceted photography festival that cannot be found anywhere else but Kyoto.
The 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami was a vivid reminder of the need for solid platforms for communication and cultural exchange be- tween Japan and the rest of the world. Japanese camera and printing technology is legendary, but Japanese photographers still have a long way to go in terms of being recognized for their use of photography as a medium of expression. KYOTOGRAPHIE seeks to explore issues that affect us all through photography while showcasing the incredible talent in Japan and the rest of the world here in Kyoto, a city of both tradition and innovation.
In this effort we have benefited from the assistance of numerous cor- porations, organizations and individuals, as well as the city, prefectur- al and national governments. Without this support, KYOTOGRAPHIE would not be possible. Young people, in particular, have the potential to serve as a link between Japan and the rest of the world. While every day of preparation has been a process of trial and error, each one has brought new encounters and opportunities. We are confident this fu- sion of the new and the old will bring about new ways of thinking, and propel our festival to new heights.

WHY
Japan and Kyoto lack a diverse event that brings creativity from the fields of music, performances, visual art, and design.
Kyoto and Kyoto Prefecture are home to spectacular venues and many incredible natural sites, presenting a perfect opportunity to host a new type of cultural event in Japan.
Like KYOTOGRAPHIE, KYOTOPHONIE will support and involve the local community and create new opportunities for local artists to collaborate with international professionals and vice versa.
KYOTOPHONIE believes that this event can create opportunities that are currently not present in Japan.
SPRING EDITION
Every weekend and over Golden Week between 15 April to 14 May, 2023 (coinciding with KYOTOGRAPHIE period) in various locations in Kyoto City.
The Spring sessions of KYOTOPHONIE bring people together to experience music not commonly available ‘live’ in Japan. Through these moments, we create a personal connection with the musicians. In most cases, they will perform in formats crafted especially for the Kyoto audience and venues – some developing premier pieces to be shown first in KYOTOPHONIE and only accessed in Kyoto.
Locations include temples dating back to the Muromachi period, modern spaces, immaculate gardens, iconic Kyoto Clubs, and more to be announced.
AUTUMN EDITION
Saturday 7 through Monday 9 October, 2023 (dates TBC)
In Autumn, we transport you to one of Japan’s most iconic and appreciated views in Amanohashidate, Kyoto Prefecture. The forests and the sandy shores of the National park have a series of thoughtful and integrated stages with an eclectic lineup that will perform over the long weekend. The audience can meander along the serene Amanohashidate coast, enjoy the ‘omotonashi’ experience of the local area and participate in a completely new music and culture event in Japan.
